FDA approves new dose of Risperdal Contra
By Erin Barker, Drug Store News
Friday, April 13, 2007

The Food and Drug administration approved today a new, smaller dose of the injection Risperdal Contra, which is used to treat schizophrenia.

Risperdal Contra already has been available in 25 mg, 37.5 mg and 50 mg. doses, but now will be available in 12.5 mg. The smaller dose will help physicians individualize treatment, particularly for patients who have renal and hepatic impairments, stated Janssen, L.P., the company that markets the drug in the United States. The new dose is expected to be available May 1.

Risperdal Contra originally was approved in 2003. The drug is manufactured by Alkermes, Inc.
